Chris Jones

Chris Jones

CEO and Co-founder

Chris co-founded CargoMate with Dennis to solve the inefficiencies experienced during his 12 years of working on container ships. He spent the last five years of his seagoing career operating icebreaking container ships in the North Atlantic for OOCL.

What do you do at CargoMate?”

I handle the day-to-day running of CargoMate and assist the tech team with designing, building and testing of the product.

Why did you start CargoMate?

I hated being on deck knowing the information and data I needed to do my job was in the Ships Office. I also knew that no matter how good the ship was at ensuring cargo operations was carried out promptly, the ship could be delayed waiting for tugs, linesmen or even the cargo documents. Finally, once the ship had left port, the Master would have to re-input completion times as part of the departure report.

CargoMate was designed to tackle those problems and much more. Give the Deck Officer the data in their hand. Keep third-parties updated with cargo progress. Send the completion times automatically to the shipping company.

What did you do before CargoMate?

I was a Second Officer and have worked on container ships for OOCL, Maersk Line and P&O Nedlloyd.

CTO and Co-Founder

Why did you start CargoMate?

I wanted to create the company I’ve always wanted to work at. That’s a place where people care about the product they’re building and are always striving to learn and improve.

Why do you like working at CargoMate?

Our team. The team means everything to me. Supportive. Highly skilled. Confident enough to challenge the status quo and humble enough to know that we have a lot to learn. We’ve spent a lot of time and resources hiring people we’d like to spend our time with. I’m still learning daily and will do for a long time to come.

Interesting challenge. We’re adding a digital platform to an analogue industry, numerous accompanying challenges make my day to day interesting. We have many technical challenges in the pipeline and at the same time we’re figuring out what brings the most value to our customers.

Our daily walk. Our office is located in beautiful Richmond upon Thames and we go for a walk at least once a day. Fresh air and a change of scenery let’s us re-energise.

Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb

Head of Growth

Nick is a shipping technology and growth marketing expert. He joined the industry eight years ago as a deck officer in the Merchant Navy and has been working in sales and marketing in the tech sector since he came ashore.

What do you do at CargoMate?

I look after sales and marketing at CargoMate and am responsible for our growth strategy.

Why did you join CargoMate?

I’m passionate about ships, tech, and business. Shipping is the most important industry in the world, 90% of all trade is carried by sea. To date, the maritime sector has been slow to adopt new technology but now is an incredibly exciting time for the industry where new technology is transforming the industry and allowing us to radically improve the safety, efficiency, and environmental impact of ships. CargoMate is at the heart of that transformation.

I’m also really excited to be part of a team where everyone cares deeply about what they do and the impact they have.

What did you do before CargoMate?

I started my career as a deck officer in the Merchant Navy, sailing on tankers, ferries, and renewable energy support vessels. After coming ashore I moved into sales and marketing, mostly within the tech sector.

Most recently I led the development of Learn@Sea, an award-winning education platform for seafarers with over 10,000 members worldwide, and set up my own digital strategy and marketing consultancy for the shipping industry.
